Ariya founded Traceable after a research paper she co-authored revealed the underrepresentation of artists’ perspectives in public conversations about generative AI. Through interviews with artists, she documents how emerging technologies are changing creative practice, authorship, ownership, and cultural value. Ariya is also an artist, and her artwork has received regional and national recognition and has been exhibited at The Met, MoMA, the High Line Gallery, and Pelham Art Center.
How it started
The idea for Traceable emerged from a research finding. Ariya Mukherjee and Oliver Muellerklein co-authored a study examining whether artists’ concerns about AI reach the public conversations shaping AI policy. The study found that they do not.
The paper’s findings inspired the idea of speaking directly with artists to understand their creative processes and their relationship with generative AI.
